Description
A detailed Renaissance engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi depicting the Last Judgment, featuring Christ in majesty surrounded by celestial and earthly figures.
This engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi depicts the traditional iconography of the Last Judgment. At the centre, Christ sits in majesty, his hand raised in benediction, resting his feet upon a globe. He is flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, who kneel in supplication. Above them, two angels sound trumpets, signalling the end of time. The lower portion of the composition shows the division of souls, with figures being led toward the gaping maw of a beast, representing the entrance to the underworld.
Raimondi was a central figure in the development of printmaking during the Italian Renaissance. He is known for his technical skill in translating the works of painters, most notably Raphael, into the medium of engraving. This work demonstrates his ability to manage complex tonal variations through the use of cross-hatching and varied line weights. The figures possess a sculptural quality, reflecting the influence of classical statuary and the artistic climate of Rome during the early sixteenth century.
The composition is structured to guide the viewer from the celestial realm at the top down to the chaotic scenes below. The use of light, radiating from behind the figure of Christ, creates a sense of divine presence that contrasts with the darker, more agitated lines used to render the figures in the lower register. Raimondi's approach to the copper plate allowed for a high degree of detail, from the folds of the drapery to the expressions on the faces of the figures. This print offers a clear view into the methods of a master engraver who helped disseminate the visual language of the High Renaissance across Europe, making the aesthetic of the period accessible to a wider audience beyond the patrons of large-scale frescoes and oil paintings.
