Description
A detailed 1549 engraving by Giorgio Ghisi, capturing a section of Michelangelo's Last Judgment with technical precision.
This engraving by Giorgio Ghisi represents a section of a larger composition based on Michelangelo's fresco in the Sistine Chapel. Ghisi, a master of the burin, produced this work in 1549, shortly after the completion of the original mural in Rome. The print is one of several sheets that, when joined, recreate the scale and complexity of the original masterpiece.
Ghisi employs a rigorous system of hatching and cross-hatching to translate the muscularity and volume of Michelangelo's figures into the medium of print. The figures are depicted in various states of motion, their bodies twisted in the characteristic Mannerist style. The composition focuses on the lower-left portion of the scene, where figures interact with the instruments of the Passion and navigate the clouds. The artist manages to capture the tension and drama of the original work through precise line work, which defines the musculature and the heavy drapery of the figures.
This print demonstrates the technical capability of sixteenth-century Italian engravers to disseminate monumental art to a wider audience. By breaking the massive fresco into manageable sheets, Ghisi allowed collectors and students to study the anatomy and composition of Michelangelo's work in detail. The clarity of the lines and the tonal range achieved through the density of the engraving process provide a clear view of the complex arrangement of figures. The work remains a significant example of how printmaking functioned as a primary vehicle for the spread of artistic ideas across Europe during the Renaissance.
