Description
A fine art print of Andrea del Sarto's 1526 fresco, depicting the Last Supper with characteristic High Renaissance balance and emotional depth.
Andrea del Sarto painted this fresco for the refectory of the convent of San Salvi in Florence. It remains one of the most accomplished examples of High Renaissance mural painting. The composition follows the traditional arrangement of the apostles seated along one side of a long table, with Christ positioned at the centre. Del Sarto employs a sophisticated use of colour and light to define the figures, moving away from the rigid linearity of earlier Florentine works.
The figures exhibit a sense of psychological weight and naturalistic movement. Each apostle reacts to the announcement of the betrayal with distinct gestures and facial expressions. The drapery of their garments is rendered with soft, fluid brushwork, demonstrating the artist's mastery of the medium. Above the main scene, the architectural setting includes an open loggia where two figures observe the event from a balcony, a device that adds depth to the spatial construction of the wall.
Unlike many contemporary depictions of this subject, del Sarto focuses on the emotional gravity of the moment rather than dramatic artifice. The palette consists of muted earth tones, soft ochres, and subtle reds, which harmonise with the architectural environment of the refectory. The preservation of the work is notable, as it survived the siege of Florence in 1529. This print captures the balance and clarity of the original fresco, offering a clear view of the artist's approach to human form and narrative composition.
