The Lotus - Shitao

A masterful ink wash painting by the 17th-century artist Shitao, featuring the lotus rendered with expressive brushwork and integrated calligraphy.

Shitao, born Zhu Ruoji, occupies a distinct position in the history of Chinese painting. As a member of the Ming dynasty imperial family who became a Buddhist monk following the Manchu conquest, his work often reflects a sense of personal isolation and creative independence. This piece, depicting the lotus, demonstrates his mastery of the ink wash technique, where the fluidity of the brushwork defines the structure of the leaves and blossoms.

The composition balances the organic forms of the lotus with the rigid, vertical structure of the calligraphy. Shitao employs a variety of ink tones, ranging from deep, saturated blacks to diluted grey washes, to suggest volume and atmospheric depth.
