Lorenzo Lotto painted The Madonna of the Roses in 1533 for the church of San Bernardino in Bergamo. This work displays the characteristic psychological depth and chromatic sensitivity associated with the Venetian school, yet it retains a distinct individuality that separates Lotto from his contemporaries. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, a common feature in altarpieces of the period.

The lower section depicts the Virgin Mary seated upon a stone pedestal, holding the Christ Child. She is flanked by Saint Joseph on the left and Saint Jerome on the right. The figures are arranged in a triangular formation, a technique used to create stability and focus. The drapery, particularly the deep blue of the Virgin's mantle and the saturated red of Saint Jerome's robes, demonstrates the artist's mastery of oil glazes. The inclusion of a rose bush to the left provides the work with its title, a symbolic reference to the Virgin's purity and the suffering of Christ.

The upper lunette features a separate scene showing Saint Francis in prayer, his hands raised towards a celestial light, and Saint Clare holding a monstrance. Lotto employs a varied palette, moving from the cool, shadowed tones of the architectural background to the warm, luminous highlights on the skin of the figures.
