Tom Roberts, a central figure of the Heidelberg School, captured the rugged Australian high country in this work. The painting depicts a lone figure traversing a snow-covered slope, a scene that reflects the isolation and harsh conditions of the Victorian Alps. Roberts utilised a rapid, direct application of paint to record the specific quality of light on the snow, demonstrating his interest in the plein air techniques that defined his practice during this period.

The composition is dominated by the stark contrast between the white expanse of the snow and the dark, earthy tones of the scrub and vegetation. By placing the small figure of the mailman within the vast, frozen terrain, Roberts emphasises the scale of the environment. The brushwork is loose and energetic, allowing the texture of the paint to suggest the uneven surface of the ground. This approach avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the immediate visual impression of the scene.

Roberts travelled to the Omeo region in the late nineteenth century, seeking to document the unique character of the Australian bush. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on the golden light of the plains, this work explores the colder, more austere aspects of the mountain regions. The painting serves as a record of the challenging routes taken by postal workers in the nineteenth century, providing a glimpse into the daily life of those operating in remote areas. Through his observation of light and shadow, Roberts conveys the quiet intensity of the winter landscape, maintaining a balance between the physical reality of the location and his own stylistic interpretation.
