This illumination, attributed to the Limbourg brothers, originates from the early 15th century. It represents the height of the International Gothic style, a period defined by its attention to detail and the integration of architectural elements within the pictorial space. The composition is framed by an elaborate, gilded architectural structure that mimics the stone carvings of a cathedral portal. Within this frame, the central figure of Christ, depicted as the Man of Sorrows, stands before a cross. His posture and the visible wounds reflect the devotional focus of the era.

Behind the central figure, a detailed background reveals a castle and a river scene. This inclusion of a specific, recognisable environment demonstrates the brothers' interest in naturalism and spatial depth, which was quite advanced for the period. The two figures kneeling on either side of the central scene are depicted in contemporary courtly dress, suggesting their role as patrons or donors.
