Charles François Daubigny was a central figure in the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who prioritised direct observation of nature. This etching, The Marsh with Storks, demonstrates his mastery of the medium and his focus on the quiet, atmospheric qualities of the French countryside. Daubigny often travelled along the rivers of France in his studio boat, the Botin, which allowed him to capture the subtle shifts in light and water that define his work.

The composition features a marshy foreground where storks wade through shallow water.
