Description
A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting figures in a modernised scene from the Tale of Genji, characterised by elegant lines and muted tones.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi belongs to the series The Tale of Genji in Elegant Modern Dress. Eishi, a former painter for the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to printmaking to capture the refined aesthetics of the Edo period. In this composition, he reinterprets the classic eleventh-century literature of Murasaki Shikibu through the lens of contemporary fashion and social customs of the late eighteenth century.
The scene depicts a group of women gathered on a veranda, an arrangement that evokes the quiet domesticity often found in bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. One figure sits before a koto, a traditional stringed instrument, while others observe or rest nearby. The architectural elements, such as the sliding doors and the overhanging pine branch, provide a structured frame for the figures. Eishi employs a muted colour palette, relying on soft greens, browns, and creams to maintain a sense of harmony. The garments worn by the women are decorated with subtle patterns, reflecting the textile trends of the era.
Eishi is noted for his elongated figure style, which departs from the more robust proportions favoured by his contemporaries. This stylistic choice contributes to the grace of the subjects. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Eishi, as seen in the precise lines of the koto strings and the delicate rendering of the pine needles. By placing the characters of the Tale of Genji in a modern setting, Eishi invites the viewer to consider the continuity of classical themes within the changing social fabric of Edo Japan. This work provides a window into the intersection of literary tradition and the visual culture of the floating world.
