Charles M. Russell, often referred to as the Cowboy Artist, produced this work in 1916. It captures a figure of spiritual authority within a Plains Indian community. The central subject is mounted on a white horse, holding a ceremonial staff adorned with feathers. The composition places the rider in the foreground, while a group of other figures on horseback follows in the distance. The scene is set against a low horizon line, allowing the expansive sky to dominate the upper portion of the frame.

Russell utilised a palette dominated by warm, golden tones to suggest the light of a setting sun.
