Lotto employs a dramatic use of light, often associated with his later works, to isolate the figures against a dark, indistinct background. The Virgin Mary, dressed in her traditional red and blue, leans over a basin to attend to the child. Beside her, a figure assists in the task, while Saint Joseph stands in the shadows to the right, his posture suggesting a protective presence.
