Description
O-kura watches through a split screen as the hostess drinks from the lantern and a vast spotted-cat shadow overtakes the temple wall, while hostess licking lantern oil and cat-like face and hand sharpen this particular moment.
The false welcome breaks when the old woman draws close to the lamp and licks its oil. O-kura sees the human face sharpen into animal features, and the domestic light that promised safety instead reveals the predatory nature of the house.
This contemporary interpretation traps face, hand and lantern inside a close black interior. Purple cloth and orange-red light stand against the enormous cat shadow, making the discovery immediate without turning it into a modern horror portrait. In The Lantern-Eater, hostess licking lantern oil and cat-like face and hand establish the soot purple orange red rhythm assigned to scene 2.
