John Frederick Kensett, a central figure of the second generation of the Hudson River School, produced this work towards the end of his career. The painting depicts a solitary, weathered pine tree clinging to a rocky coastal promontory in Darien, Connecticut. Kensett was a master of the Luminist style, which prioritised the careful observation of light, atmosphere, and the quiet stillness of the American wilderness. In this composition, the artist employs a restrained palette to capture the hazy, diffused light characteristic of the New England coast.
