Description
A 1916 Synthetic Cubist still life by Juan Gris, featuring a glass, cigars, and a knife arranged within an oval composition.
Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. In this 1916 work, The Packet of Cigars, he applies his characteristic analytical rigour to the objects of daily life. The composition is contained within an oval format, a choice that forces the viewer to focus on the geometric relationships between the depicted items. A glass, a packet of cigars, and a knife are broken down into their essential planes and reassembled on the canvas.
Gris was known for his mathematical approach to painting, often constructing his images from a grid of lines before adding colour. Here, the palette is restrained, relying on ochre, black, and grey tones to define the space. The overlapping forms create a sense of shallow depth, where the background and foreground merge through shared lines and tonal transitions. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented works of his contemporaries, this painting demonstrates a clearer sense of order and structural clarity.
The artist uses the oval frame to echo the rounded forms of the glass and the curvature of the table surface, creating a cohesive visual rhythm. The light source is not fixed, as Gris prioritises the internal logic of the composition over naturalistic representation. By flattening the objects into distinct shapes, he invites the viewer to reconstruct the scene mentally. This work captures the transition from the analytical phase of Cubism toward a more decorative and synthetic style, where the object is not merely depicted but constructed through the language of geometry and colour. It remains a clear example of his ability to balance intellectual structure with a refined aesthetic sensibility.
