This engraving by Adriaen Collaert, after a design by Hans Bol, depicts the biblical narrative of the Rich Fool from the Gospel of Luke. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the foreground, the narrative unfolds with a group of figures, including Christ, observing the activities of a farmer who is busy expanding his barns to store an abundant harvest. This action serves as the visual representation of the parable, where the farmer prioritises material wealth over spiritual preparation.

The background features a sprawling rural scene, typical of the Flemish tradition, with a distant town, rolling hills, and agricultural workers. The sky is dominated by a celestial symbol, a crab within a sunburst, which adds an astrological or symbolic layer to the scene. The engraving technique is precise, using fine lines to create texture in the foliage, the thatched roofs of the barns, and the drapery of the figures. The cross-hatching provides depth and shadow, giving the scene a sense of atmospheric perspective that draws the eye from the immediate foreground towards the distant horizon.

Adriaen Collaert was a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp. His work often involved translating the designs of contemporary painters into prints, which allowed for the wider dissemination of religious and moralising imagery. The inclusion of Latin text at the bottom of the print provides the scriptural context, reinforcing the moral lesson of the parable.
