The figures are rendered with the precise, linear quality characteristic of sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking, showing a clear focus on the interaction between the employer and the workers. The landowner, positioned on the right, gestures towards the group, while a bag of coins sits upon the table, signifying the completion of the day's labour.

In the background, the scene shifts to the vineyard itself. Rows of vines stretch across the hillside, where other workers are depicted in smaller scale, tending to the crops. This use of spatial depth allows the viewer to observe both the immediate transaction of wages and the broader context of the agricultural setting. The architectural element of a single, prominent column on the right provides a vertical anchor for the composition, contrasting with the horizontal expanse of the vineyard behind it.

Abraham de Bruyn was a prolific engraver based in Antwerp, a centre for print production during the late sixteenth century. His work often involved the reproduction of religious and moralising themes, which were widely circulated among the public. The inclusion of the Latin inscription 'MATTHEI, CAP XX V. 1' at the base identifies the specific scriptural source for the image.
