The Plains of Heaven is one of the three large-scale oil paintings comprising John Martin's final triptych, which also includes The Last Judgment and The Great Day of His Wrath. Completed in the final years of the artist's life, this work depicts a vision of the afterlife inspired by the Book of Revelation. Martin presents a vast, panoramic view of an idyllic celestial realm, characterised by luminous light, cascading waterfalls, and distant, ethereal mountains.

The composition employs a dramatic sense of scale, a hallmark of Martin's approach to biblical subjects. The foreground is occupied by dark, shadowed foliage and rocky outcrops, which serve to frame the expansive, sun-drenched valley beyond. The middle ground features a tranquil, azure lake reflecting the soft, golden light that permeates the atmosphere. Figures are rendered as small, almost insignificant elements within the grand design, emphasising the overwhelming nature of the divine setting.
