Gabriel Metsu, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, produced The Poultry Seller around 1662. This work belongs to the genre tradition, which focuses on scenes of everyday life. The composition features an elderly man seated on a barrel, holding a white cockerel, while a young woman in a red jacket and white apron stands before him. A small spaniel looks up at the interaction, adding a sense of domestic realism to the scene.

The setting is an outdoor market area, defined by a brick wall and a bare tree. Metsu employs a controlled palette, using light to draw attention to the figures and the textures of their clothing. The contrast between the weathered appearance of the seller and the refined attire of the woman suggests a social narrative common in seventeenth-century Dutch art.
