Giorgio Ghisi, a master engraver from Mantua, produced this composition during the height of the Italian Mannerist period. The work depicts a grim interior scene, populated by figures in various states of confinement and physical distress. The engraving demonstrates the technical precision for which Ghisi was known, utilising a complex system of cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figures and the cold, stone surfaces of the cell.

The scene is laden with classical references, as indicated by the Latin inscription at the base, which alludes to the justice of Julius Caesar. The figures are arranged in a manner that emphasises their isolation despite their proximity to one another. One figure is suspended from the ceiling, while others are bound in stocks or chained to the walls. The perspective is carefully constructed to draw the eye toward the barred window at the back, where two figures look out toward an unseen horizon.

Ghisi was heavily influenced by the works of Giulio Romano, and this print reflects the dramatic, often theatrical approach to human anatomy common in the Mantuan school. The lighting is stark, creating deep shadows that heighten the sense of claustrophobia. The composition avoids a single point of focus, instead distributing the visual weight across the various suffering subjects.
