The Raft of the Medusa is a monumental work of French Romanticism. It depicts the aftermath of the wreck of the French frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of Mauritania in 1816. Géricault chose to represent the moment when the survivors, adrift on a makeshift raft for thirteen days, first spot the rescue ship, the Argus, on the horizon.

The composition is structured around two pyramidal forms. The first, on the left, is anchored by the mast and the ropes. The second, on the right, culminates in the figure of a man waving a cloth to signal the distant ship. This arrangement creates a sense of dynamic tension, pulling the viewer from the despair of the dead and dying in the foreground toward the desperate hope of the survivors at the apex of the pyramid.

Géricault conducted extensive research to ensure the accuracy of his depiction. He interviewed survivors, constructed a scale model of the raft, and even studied corpses and severed limbs in his studio to capture the pallor and physical decay of the victims. The palette is dominated by dark, earthy tones, with deep shadows and muted flesh colours that emphasise the grim reality of the situation. The lighting is dramatic, casting long shadows and highlighting the strained musculature of the figures.

This painting broke from the conventions of Neoclassical history painting by focusing on a contemporary political scandal rather than a classical or biblical subject. It captures the raw human experience of suffering, abandonment, and the thin line between life and death. The work remains a powerful example of the artist's ability to combine rigorous academic training with the emotional intensity characteristic of the Romantic movement.
