François Boucher, a central figure of the French Rococo, painted this interpretation of the Ovidian myth in 1747. The scene depicts the Phoenician princess Europa, who has been abducted by Jupiter in the form of a white bull. Boucher arranges the composition to prioritise grace and theatricality, typical of his work for the French court and his private patrons.

Europa sits atop the bull, surrounded by her attendants on the shore, while putti hover above in the clouds. The sea is populated by tritons and sea nymphs, who observe the transformation of the scene. Boucher employs a palette of soft blues, creams, and rose tones, creating a sense of atmospheric lightness. The figures exhibit the characteristic porcelain-like skin tones and fluid, elongated forms that defined his mature style.
