Jacob Jordaens, a contemporary of Peter Paul Rubens, produced this interpretation of the classical myth of Europa in the mid-seventeenth century. The narrative depicts the moment Zeus, having transformed into a white bull, carries Europa away across the sea. Jordaens focuses on the immediate reaction of Europa's companions, who are gathered on the shore. The composition is crowded with figures, a characteristic trait of the artist's style, which often prioritises a sense of physical presence and tactile realism over the more idealised forms found in Italian Renaissance works.

The painting displays the characteristic palette of the Flemish Baroque, utilising warm flesh tones, deep shadows, and a sense of movement created by the billowing drapery. Europa is positioned on the back of the bull, her posture suggesting a mixture of surprise and resignation. Surrounding her, the other figures are rendered with a focus on their individual expressions and physical forms.
