David Deuchar, a Scottish etcher and seal engraver, produced this work as part of his collection of etchings after the Dutch and Flemish masters. The composition draws direct inspiration from the 17th-century Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn, specifically referencing his etching of the same subject. Deuchar was known for his technical proficiency in replicating the expressive, economical line work characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age.

The image depicts a rat catcher, a figure of low social standing often found in the margins of historical genre painting.
