In the foreground, the Virgin Mary is seated on the ground, nursing the infant Christ. Her posture is relaxed, yet the drapery of her garments is rendered with the rhythmic, flowing lines typical of the period. To the right, a donkey rests, providing a sense of domestic realism to the biblical narrative. Matham, a pupil of Hendrik Goltzius, demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency in this work.
