Description
A delicate Baroque etching by Simone Cantarini depicting the Holy Family resting during their flight into Egypt, accompanied by an angel.
This etching by Simone Cantarini depicts the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who is seated on the ground, nursing the Infant Jesus. Beside them, an angel stands, reaching towards the branches of a tree above. To the right, Saint Joseph rests, observing the scene. The etching demonstrates the influence of Guido Reni, under whom Cantarini studied in Bologna. The artist employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the figures and the surrounding foliage, creating a sense of movement within the quiet, pastoral setting.
Cantarini was a significant figure in the Bolognese school of the seventeenth century. His printmaking technique is characterised by a light, rhythmic touch, which avoids heavy cross-hatching in favour of delicate, parallel strokes. This approach allows the paper to remain visible, providing a luminous quality to the image. The figures are rendered with a grace typical of the period, reflecting the classicising tendencies of the Baroque style in Italy. The interaction between the figures is gentle, focusing on the domestic nature of the sacred event rather than its dramatic or miraculous elements. The inclusion of the angel, who appears to be gathering fruit or foliage, adds a layer of narrative detail to the composition. This work provides an example of the technical skill and stylistic refinement that defined Cantarini's contribution to Italian printmaking. The etching is a study in balance, where the figures are integrated into the natural environment through the use of light and shadow, rather than rigid architectural or spatial structures.
