Description
A dramatic mezzotint by Charles Howard Hodges depicting the Resurrection of Christ, noted for its masterful use of light and shadow.
This mezzotint by Charles Howard Hodges depicts the Resurrection of Christ. The composition centres on the figure of Christ, who stands with a staff, emerging from the tomb. His form is illuminated by a radiant light emanating from behind his head, which contrasts with the surrounding darkness. Below him, the Roman soldiers are shown in various states of shock and confusion, their bodies twisted in reaction to the miraculous event. A small dog is visible in the lower left corner, observing the scene.
Hodges, a British artist who spent much of his career in the Netherlands, was a skilled practitioner of the mezzotint technique. This method allowed for the creation of soft gradations of tone, which are evident here in the transition from the deep shadows of the cave to the bright light surrounding the central figure. The dramatic use of chiaroscuro creates a sense of theatre, typical of late eighteenth-century printmaking. The figures are rendered with anatomical precision, reflecting the influence of classical training on the artist. The print captures the tension of the moment, focusing on the physical reactions of the guards as they witness the event. The textures of the armour, the fabric of the drapery, and the rocky terrain are all articulated through the fine, velvety blacks and subtle greys characteristic of the mezzotint process. This work demonstrates the technical proficiency required to balance such high-contrast elements while maintaining clarity in the narrative.
