Many of the attendees wear the traditional Venetian mask, the bauta, and the tricorne hat, which allowed for anonymity during the carnival season. This social levelling was a hallmark of the Ridotto, where aristocrats and commoners mingled under the cover of disguise.

Guardi employs a loose, painterly technique that prioritises the suggestion of movement and light over precise anatomical detail.
