Francesco Guardi is primarily recognised for his Venetian vedute, yet his early career involved religious compositions that demonstrate his mastery of the Rococo style. This work depicts the biblical narrative of Abraham preparing to sacrifice his son, Isaac, only to be interrupted by an angel. Guardi employs a fluid, sketch-like application of paint, which creates a sense of immediate drama and movement.
