Description
A 1546 engraving by Hans Sebald Beham depicting Christ as the Salvator Mundi, rendered with technical precision and classic Northern Renaissance detail.
This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, dated 1546, depicts Christ as the Salvator Mundi. He stands atop a globe, representing dominion over the world, while holding a cross-staff. The composition is enclosed within an oval frame, inscribed with the German text: MIR IST GEBEN ALLER GWALT IM HIMEL VND ERDEN (To me is given all power in heaven and on earth).
Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was highly skilled in the production of small-scale prints. This work demonstrates his technical precision in the use of the burin. The figure of Christ is rendered with careful anatomical modelling, while the surrounding space is filled with cherubim and clouds, creating a sense of celestial atmosphere. The hatching techniques provide depth and texture to the drapery of the robes, showing the influence of Dürer on the Nuremberg school of printmaking.
The artist's monogram, ISB, appears in the lower right corner, a common practice for his editions. The work reflects the theological focus of the period, presenting a formalised image of divine authority. The contrast between the central figure and the surrounding decorative elements is balanced, typical of the refined aesthetic found in sixteenth-century German graphic arts. This print is a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by the Little Masters, who prioritised clarity and detail in their small-format engravings.
