The composition depicts a sleeping figure slumped over a desk, his head resting on his arms. Behind him, a swarm of nocturnal creatures, including owls, bats, and a lynx, emerge from the shadows. The desk is inscribed with the title: El sueño de la razón produce monstruos.

Goya utilised a combination of etching and aquatint to achieve the atmospheric tonal shifts that define the work. The fine, hatched lines of the etching provide the structure for the figures, while the aquatint creates the grainy, dark background that suggests a space filled with unease. The artist intended this series as a critique of the superstitions and social follies prevalent in Spanish society during the late eighteenth century.

Rather than a simple depiction of a nightmare, the image functions as a commentary on the Enlightenment. Goya suggests that when human reason is abandoned, the mind becomes susceptible to irrationality and chaos. The artist himself appears to be the subject, as he often used his own likeness in his prints.
