Caspar David Friedrich painted The Stages of Life in 1835, near the end of his career. The composition features a coastal scene at dusk, where five figures stand upon a grassy shore. An elderly man, seen from behind, leans on a cane, representing the final phase of human existence. Beside him, a man in a top hat stands upright, while three children play with a small flag. This arrangement mirrors the five ships visible in the harbour, which vary in size and distance from the shore. The largest vessel in the centre corresponds to the adult figure, while the smaller boats represent the children and the elderly man.

Friedrich uses the vast, open horizon to invite contemplation on the passage of time. The light of the setting sun casts a soft, golden glow across the water, creating a sense of quietude. The figures are dressed in contemporary clothing of the period, yet their placement suggests a universal narrative rather than a specific portrait. The artist often employed this technique of placing figures with their backs to the viewer, known as the Rückenfigur, to encourage the audience to identify with the subjects and share their perspective on the scene.

Technically, the work demonstrates the precision typical of Friedrich's later period. The transition from the foreground, with its detailed rocks and vegetation, to the atmospheric distance of the sea and sky, is handled with careful attention to light and shadow. The painting is held in the Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig.
