Description
A 1914 Synthetic Cubist still life by Juan Gris, featuring a newspaper and a sunblind rendered through geometric planes and textured surfaces.
Painted in 1914, The Sunblind is a characteristic example of the Synthetic Cubist period. Juan Gris, a Spanish artist based in Paris, moved away from the fragmented analytical approach of his contemporaries to focus on a more structured, architectural arrangement of forms. This work demonstrates his method of building a composition from distinct, overlapping planes rather than deconstructing a single viewpoint.
The painting features a tabletop scene, incorporating everyday objects such as a newspaper, identified by the masthead 'Le Socialiste', and a glass. The titular sunblind dominates the upper portion of the canvas, rendered with rhythmic, horizontal lines that suggest the slats of a shutter. Gris employs a combination of painted wood grain textures and flat, opaque colour blocks to define the spatial relationships between the objects. The palette is restrained, relying on ochres, browns, and muted blues to maintain a sense of balance across the flattened pictorial space.
Unlike the earlier, more monochromatic phases of Cubism, this work introduces a clearer sense of object identity. The inclusion of the newspaper fragment serves as a literal reference to the world outside the studio, a common device in the period. Gris manages the tension between the two-dimensional surface of the canvas and the three-dimensional objects depicted through precise geometry. The composition is held together by a rigorous internal logic, where every shape and line contributes to the overall stability of the image. This piece remains a clear representation of the artist's technical precision and his ability to transform mundane subjects into a complex visual exercise.
