Henri Martin, a French painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, developed a distinct style characterised by the application of small, rhythmic brushstrokes. This technique, often termed Divisionism or Neo-Impressionism, allows colours to blend optically when viewed from a distance. In this work, the artist captures a quiet moment on a terrace, framed by the vertical silhouette of a cypress tree. The composition relies on the interplay between the structured stone balustrade and the soft, dappled light filtering through the foliage.

The palette consists of muted ochres, greens, and soft whites, reflecting the warm light of the French countryside. Martin moved away from the strict scientific application of colour theory favoured by Seurat, opting instead for a more intuitive and atmospheric approach.
