Maxime Maufra, a member of the Pont-Aven School, produced this study of the rugged Breton coastline. His approach to the subject reflects the influence of Impressionist light studies combined with a more structured, Post-Impressionist application of paint. The composition focuses on the interaction between the solid, dark rock formations and the kinetic energy of the sea.

Maufra employs a technique of visible, directional brushwork to convey the movement of the waves as they strike the shore. The palette is dominated by deep purples and earthy browns in the cliffs, contrasted against the bright, almost acidic greens of the coastal vegetation.
