This engraving, titled Nicomaxia Vitae, represents the work of Aegidius Sadeler II, a prominent member of the Sadeler family of engravers. The composition is based on a design by Hans von Aachen, with additional input from Joris Hoefnagel. It presents a complex allegorical scene centred on the Three Fates, or Parcae, who are depicted spinning, measuring, and cutting the thread of human life.

The central figure holds the spindle, while her companions manage the thread, illustrating the classical concept of mortality. Above them, a putto appears within a radiant light, while a skeletal figure representing death looms to the right. The scene is framed by Latin inscriptions and biblical references, specifically from the Book of Job, which frame the classical mythology within a Christian moralising context. The text at the bottom offers a meditation on the brevity of life and the necessity of divine grace, reflecting the intellectual climate of the late sixteenth century.

Technically, the print demonstrates the precision characteristic of Sadeler’s output. The use of cross-hatching and fine line work creates a sense of volume in the drapery of the figures and the textures of the surrounding objects. The circular composition is balanced by the placement of the figures and the architectural elements, such as the stone blocks bearing inscriptions. This work functions as a memento mori, encouraging the viewer to contemplate the transition from earthly existence to spiritual salvation. The inclusion of the sacrificial lamb at the base further reinforces the theological narrative, contrasting the inevitability of physical death with the promise of eternal life. The print remains a significant example of the collaborative nature of printmaking in the late Renaissance, where designers and engravers worked in tandem to produce sophisticated visual arguments for a learned audience.
