Bernardo Strozzi, a Genoese master who later settled in Venice, produced this interpretation of the biblical narrative concerning the payment of the temple tax. The composition focuses on the interaction between Christ and the tax collector, a moment defined by the exchange of a coin. Strozzi employs a dramatic use of light, a hallmark of the Baroque period, to draw attention to the central figures while casting the surrounding group in shadow.

The palette is dominated by deep, warm tones, particularly the red of Christ's robe and the earthy ochres of the surrounding garments.
