The Triumph of Want is a masterful engraving by the Dutch printmaker Cornelis Cort, based on a design by the Flemish artist Maarten van Heemskerck. This work belongs to a series of allegorical prints exploring the human condition and moral failings. The composition depicts a chariot pulled by emaciated horses, representing the physical and spiritual toll of poverty and neglect.

At the centre of the chariot sits a figure embodying Torpor, holding a staff, while other personifications of human vices and conditions, such as Inopia (Want) and Impia (Impiety), are arranged around the vehicle. The figures are rendered with precise, controlled lines, a hallmark of Cort's technical skill, which helped to standardise the language of engraving in the sixteenth century. The background features a distant townscape, providing a sense of scale and context to the allegorical procession.

Below the main image, a cartouche contains Latin text that explains the moral narrative, identifying the figures and their symbolic roles.
