Herman van Swanevelt, a Dutch painter and etcher active in Rome, produced this work during a period when the Italian countryside exerted a strong influence on Northern European artists. Known as one of the 'Italianate' Dutch painters, Swanevelt focused on the atmospheric qualities of the Roman Campagna. This etching demonstrates his technical proficiency with the needle, employing varied line weights to define the textures of foliage, rock formations, and distant hills.

The composition follows a classic structure, with heavy, dark trees framing the left side of the image. This creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye towards the middle ground where a small building sits near the water. The figures of the fishermen are small in scale, integrated into the environment rather than dominating it.
