Description

A Post-Impressionist depiction of the chapel at Sainte-Avoye in Brittany, rendered with rhythmic brushwork and a palette of earthy tones.

Maxime Maufra, a member of the Pont-Aven School, frequently turned his attention to the rugged terrain of Brittany. This work depicts the chapel of Sainte-Avoye in the Morbihan region, a site that attracted many artists during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Maufra captures the architectural form of the chapel, which rises above the surrounding village buildings with its distinctive spire and stone masonry.

The composition is anchored by a path leading the viewer towards the ecclesiastical structure. Maufra employs a technique characterised by visible, rhythmic brushwork that defines the textures of the stone walls, the foliage of the trees, and the light filtering through the sky. The palette consists of earthy tones, including ochre, muted greens, and cool greys, which reflect the specific light conditions of the Breton coast. The artist avoids smooth blending, preferring to build the image through distinct applications of paint that suggest the physical presence of the architecture and the surrounding vegetation.

Unlike his contemporaries who focused on the more commercialised coastal resorts, Maufra often sought out the quieter, inland villages of Brittany. His approach to this scene demonstrates an interest in the relationship between human construction and the natural environment. The chapel, while central to the composition, is integrated into the village fabric, surrounded by low stone walls and trees that frame the view. This print reproduces the textures of the original oil painting, allowing for a close examination of Maufra's handling of light and form. The work provides a glimpse into the rural character of the region as it appeared at the turn of the century, documenting a specific location through the lens of a Post-Impressionist sensibility.
