This depiction of the Virgin Mary forms part of the interior register of the Ghent Altarpiece, a polyptych commissioned for the Saint Bavo Cathedral in Ghent. Jan van Eyck, a master of the Early Netherlandish tradition, applied oil paint with unprecedented precision to capture the textures of fabric, metal, and skin. The figure is shown in a moment of quiet contemplation, reading a book while seated before a decorative textile backdrop.

Van Eyck employs a meticulous approach to light and shadow. The crown worn by the Virgin is rendered with individual jewels and pearls, each catching the light in a distinct manner. Her mantle, a deep blue, is fastened with a brooch that displays the artist's ability to simulate the reflective qualities of gold and precious stones. The text inscribed in the arch above her head provides a theological context, framing her as a figure of celestial authority.

The composition balances the human qualities of the Virgin with the symbolic requirements of a devotional object. Her expression is soft and focused, yet the surrounding elements, such as the halo and the elaborate crown, denote her status as the Queen of Heaven. The use of oil paint allowed Van Eyck to build up layers of glaze, creating a depth of colour that was difficult to achieve with the tempera techniques common in the period.
