Gerard David, a master of the Early Netherlandish tradition, produced this diptych depicting the Annunciation. The Archangel Gabriel is shown in a dynamic pose, his robes rendered with precise folds that suggest weight and volume. He holds a sceptre, his gesture directed towards the Virgin. Opposite him, Mary kneels in a domestic interior, her posture one of quiet acceptance. The presence of the Holy Spirit, represented by the dove surrounded by a luminous halo, connects the two figures across the divide. A vase containing lilies, a traditional symbol of purity, sits beside her, while an open book rests upon a wooden lectern.

David demonstrates a mastery of light and shadow, particularly in the way the blue garments of the Virgin absorb the ambient light of the room. The tiled floor provides a sense of linear perspective, drawing the viewer into the space. The artist avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the psychological state of the figures and the clarity of the narrative.
