This engraving by Cornelis Cort depicts the personification of Patience, or Patientia, a common subject in Renaissance moral iconography. Cort, a Dutch master known for his technical precision in copperplate engraving, captures the figure seated in a natural setting, flanked by two gnarled trees. The woman holds a cross, a traditional symbol of endurance and faith, while a lamb rests beside her, representing gentleness and innocence. Beneath her, a dragon lies subdued, symbolising the triumph of calm resolve over chaotic or malevolent forces.

The composition follows the conventions of the period, using clear, controlled lines to define form and texture. The drapery of the figure's robes is rendered with rhythmic, parallel hatching that creates a sense of volume and weight. Cort’s ability to translate the painterly qualities of his contemporaries into the medium of engraving is evident here, particularly in the modelling of the figure's features and the tactile quality of the surrounding foliage. The Latin inscription at the base provides a moralising context, suggesting that patience softens even the hardest of circumstances.

Cort spent a significant portion of his career in Italy, where he collaborated with artists such as Titian.
