Henry Ossawa Tanner, an American artist who relocated to Paris to escape the racial prejudices of his home country, produced this work during a period when he focused on scenes of everyday life. The composition centres on a young boy, intently focused on carving a wooden shoe, or sabot, while an older man observes his progress from the shadows.

Tanner employs a chiaroscuro technique, using a single light source from a window to illuminate the figures and the wood shavings scattered across the floor. This dramatic contrast draws the eye to the physical labour of the boy, while the surrounding workshop remains shrouded in deep, muted tones. The texture of the wood, the rough clothing of the figures, and the debris of the craft are rendered with careful attention to detail.

This painting reflects the influence of his training under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, combined with the atmospheric qualities he absorbed from the French academic tradition.
