This engraving by the Dutch artist Jacobus Houbraken depicts the English dramatist Thomas Otway. Produced in 1741, the work is part of a larger series documenting historical figures, often based on earlier paintings. In this instance, Houbraken worked from a portrait by Mary Beale. The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture, placing the subject within an oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth.

Otway is shown in a contemplative posture, with his hand resting near his face, a common visual shorthand for intellectual or creative labour during this period. Below the portrait, Houbraken includes allegorical elements that reference the subject's profession. A lyre and a theatrical mask are positioned on the plinth, symbols associated with poetry and drama.
