Shunkō was a student of Katsukawa Shunshō and is recognised for his contributions to the yakusha-e (actor print) and sumo-e (sumo print) genres during the mid-Edo period. His work often focused on the physical presence of his subjects, utilising a distinct line quality to define their forms.

The composition is minimalist, relying on clean, confident outlines rather than colour or complex shading to convey the figures. The wrestlers are shown in a standing arrangement, their postures suggesting a relaxed state outside of the ring. The artist employs a calligraphic approach to the drapery of their robes, which contrasts with the more robust rendering of their facial features and hands.
