Description
A bold, expressive calligraphy of the character for tiger by the Qing Dynasty scholar-official Weng Tonghe, rendered in black ink on red paper.
Weng Tonghe was a prominent scholar-official during the late Qing Dynasty, serving as a tutor to two emperors. His mastery of calligraphy was widely recognised among his contemporaries, reflecting the traditional education and aesthetic values of the Chinese literati class. This specific work features the character for tiger, rendered in a bold, expressive style that departs from more rigid, formal scripts.
The composition is dominated by the single, large character, which occupies the majority of the vertical space. The ink application is heavy, showing the physical movement of the brush across the paper. The choice of red paper provides a stark contrast to the black ink, a combination often associated with auspicious occasions and traditional celebrations in Chinese culture. The surface of the paper shows signs of age, including fine cracks and texture that add to the historical character of the piece.
In the lower right corner, the artist has included a colophon and his signature. This inscription provides context for the creation of the piece, linking it to the year 1866. The balance between the monumental scale of the central character and the smaller, precise columns of the inscription demonstrates the artist's control over spatial arrangement. This print captures the texture of the original ink and the subtle variations in tone where the brush lifted from the paper. It is an example of the expressive potential within traditional Chinese brushwork, where the energy of the stroke is as important as the legibility of the character itself. The work remains a clear representation of the scholarly tradition of the late nineteenth century, where calligraphy functioned as both a personal discipline and a public statement of cultural identity.
