Maruyama Ōkyo was a central figure in eighteenth-century Japanese art, known for his synthesis of traditional East Asian ink techniques with Western-influenced observational realism. This work depicts a tiger, a subject that held symbolic weight in Japanese culture, yet Ōkyo approaches the animal with a focus on physical presence and anatomical accuracy. The tiger is rendered in monochrome ink washes, with the artist using varying densities of pigment to suggest the texture of fur and the muscular structure beneath the skin. The composition is sparse, typical of the artist's preference for negative space. The tiger sits in a posture of alertness, its head turned as if reacting to a sudden gust of wind.
