Description
A detailed seventeenth-century Dutch etching by Johannes Visscher, serving as the title page for a series of animal studies.
This etching serves as the title page for the series 'Diversa Animalia Quadrupedia', a collection of prints depicting various four-legged animals. Johannes Visscher, a skilled Dutch engraver, executed this work after designs by Nicolaes Berchem. The composition features a large stone fountain block, which acts as a central plinth for the Latin title. To the left, a rider sits atop a donkey, accompanied by a small dog. To the right, a woman stands among a group of livestock, including sheep and a cow. The scene is set against a backdrop of foliage and clouds, typical of the pastoral themes favoured by Berchem and his contemporaries.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. Visscher uses varied line weights to define the textures of animal fur, the rough surface of the stone fountain, and the soft folds of the figures' clothing. The interplay of light and shadow creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the rural scene. The inclusion of the lion-head fountain spout adds a classical element to the otherwise rustic setting. This work reflects the period's interest in animal studies and the dissemination of such imagery through print series, which were often used as models for other artists or as decorative items for collectors. The etching captures a quiet, observational quality, focusing on the interaction between humans and animals in a natural environment. The balance between the structured typography on the stone and the organic forms of the figures creates a harmonious visual arrangement.
