Description
A refined etching by Nikolaos Gyzis depicting the mythological figure Tmolos, presented in a classical medallion style.
This etching by Nikolaos Gyzis depicts Tmolos, the mountain god from Greek mythology. The composition is presented within a circular frame, reminiscent of an antique coin or a classical medallion. The figure is shown in profile, facing right, with a beard and hair adorned with vine leaves, which identifies him as a deity associated with the natural world and the slopes of Mount Tmolos in Lydia.
Gyzis, a central figure in the Munich School of Greek art, demonstrates his technical precision through the controlled line work of the etching process. The shading is achieved through fine, parallel lines that define the contours of the face and the texture of the foliage. The Greek inscription, TMOΛOΣ, is integrated into the right side of the circular border, maintaining the aesthetic of a numismatic study. The artist's signature appears in the lower margin, confirming his hand in this classical subject.
The work reflects the nineteenth-century interest in classical antiquity and the revival of mythological themes within European academic circles. Gyzis, who spent much of his career in Munich, often turned to such subjects to explore the intersection of historical narrative and formal composition. The print is characterised by its restraint and focus on anatomical accuracy, typical of the academic training he received and later imparted as a professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's engagement with the classical past, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation to focus on the clarity of the profile and the symbolic elements of the deity.
