Robert Spencer was a key figure in the New Hope School of American Impressionism. This work depicts the Tohicken Valley near Point Pleasant, Pennsylvania, a region that provided the subject matter for many of his most recognised paintings. Spencer often focused on the quiet, rural character of the Delaware River Valley, moving away from the more polished urban scenes favoured by his contemporaries.

The composition is framed by two bare, skeletal trees in the foreground, which act as anchors for the viewer.
